About
Meet the Artist Behind the Brush
What started my interest in art was a painting class that I took while in college in 1976. I painted a scene of the Oregon Coast which hung on my parents’ wall in Newport for many years and is currently on my wall now. It wasn’t until I retired from Kaiser Permanente as an RN in 2024 that I decided to re-ignite my interest in painting. That is when I turned one of the bedrooms of my home into a studio.
Since I used oil paint with my first painting, I prefer using this medium. I paint a variety of subjects using abstract realism; people, animals, historic places or fun wine or liquor scenes. I am inspired by pictures of places that I have visited or pictures that I have taken.
I also enjoy photography using my Sony camera, so much of my inspiration is from the pictures that I take. Many of my paintings are of coastal scenes, lighthouses, or historical Oregon City. My Siberian cats, pets, and wildlife are great subjects as well.
My favorite type of painting is more of an impasto style which has a thick application of paint and visible brush and palate strokes, but I also enjoy realism style when historic scenes or animals are the subject. Since retiring, I have painted over 30 paintings. It is enjoyable and relaxing for me and I enjoy painting things that will enhance any home.
I build my own wood panels for painting which vary in size. My latest painting is done on pure copper which I mounted on a wooden frame. This one is a very large 3’ x 4’ piece. It depicts a pig holding a bottle of wine and is surrounded by top brands of wine bottles. The copper shines in this piece. It would be a great addition to any wine bar or kitchen. Since this piece turned out so well, it may be the start of a new type of panel for future paintings.
